Pluto in Capricorn- What does that mean for you?

On 25th January 2008 Pluto moved into Capricorn for the first time in 230 years. It’s currently retrograding back into Sagittarius and will return on November 26th 2008 to stay in Capricorn until 2024. Each time Pluto changes zodiac sign it defines an epoch of change both on a personal level and on the world stage.

You’ve probably heard of astrological Pluto as the god of the underworld and ruler of invisibly powerful and regenerative forces. That sounds unsettling until we understand and accept that life is full of change often when its least expected.

In astrology those changes are marked by the symbol and archetype of Pluto representing the Birth, Death and Rebirth cycle. As a modern parallel it’s similar to the rubbish recycling process where we continuously throw out old used material that returns later completely transformed into another more useful form.

Pluto takes a part of our personality and slowly coerces it to recycle itself. Usually this is done by confronting us with the past and deeply buried issues which can be painful yet necessary to face. It can literally feel like we are dragged into the darkness of the souls depths to undergo an alchemical process, eventually returning us to the daylight to display that part of our personality in a more effective and self empowered way.

The ego likes to habitually hold onto what it’s familiar with so a Pluto transit can be an excruciating experience until the ego learns to realise that a change would in fact be advantageous and starts to go with the flow. Once it lets go a new, wiser and stronger part of the self emerges, allowing for more power and control in understanding oneself and interacting with life.

So the overall trick is to be aware of changes as they come and allow room for regeneration, safe in the understanding that something better is coming to replace it.

Pluto’s entry into Capricorn also affects the world and society. The zodiac sign of Capricorn represents authority, responsibility, structure and boundaries through such things as governments, monarchies, religions and corporations. Capricornian traits include a conservative and traditional approach towards life yet it could also perceived as cold, gruff, dictatorial and unemotional. Capricorn is also the sign of the father, aging and maturity, symbolised by the Goat.

Pluto represents forces for change and power struggles, often exposing the darker side of something before changing it. Pluto is also the planet that represents tremendous power and wealth, used for good or ill.

So by putting the two meanings of Capricorn and Pluto together, we can probably expect some of the following over the next 15 years: the fall and rise of empires, dictators and authority figures; more corporate control and trade monopolies creating extremes in wealth and poverty; further credit crunch and debt problems spiralling out of control in need of a new system; and in the world of health and science maybe a change in the understanding of the aging process and even a halting to old age.

The power of governments and empires will be undergoing a similar transformation exposing the darker side of the government’s power and authoritative control then bringing about a change in the way they operate. This is currently reflected by the Chinese governments’ attitude towards Tibet, and the ruling military junta in Burma’s attitude towards its people. We can expect a major overhaul in politics and traditional structures including established religions and monarchies. Pluto’s trademark is evident in the death and complete removal of an outdated structure in favour of a brand new one. The traditional power of government will be replaced with the power of corporate and big business structure, which will also be going through a transformative stage. This is reflected by current stock market fluctuations and credit crises, mounting consumer debt, sub prime mortgage collapses and escalating inflation. Our world financial situation will require a necessary restructure and rearrangement of the existing mode by the end of 2008.

Pluto is a slow moving generational planet that manipulates with a power that cannot be ignored or resisted. It can be used for better or for worse, bringing great power or deep corruption. Our leaders, monarchs and those in an authoritative position in society will be coming into the spotlight. How they lead us will be put into focus as society question what values they actually represent. Capricorn brings a strong influence to law and order and we might well experience draconian administration by governments in their attempt to maintain a cohesive structure. Recent examples of ‘Big Brother’ style surveillance mark the beginning of this phase.

The Retrograde Effect

The Retrograde effect: looking back to look forward.

So there’s always loads of hype about Mercury retrogrades, but what about the other planets when they go retrograde, and what exactly is going on in a retrograde cycle that we as astrologers can tell our clients, and best of all predict something juicy? Primarily what we’re looking for is the Stationary degree.

When any transiting planet stops on one particular degree as it prepares to go either retrograde or direct, we’ve entered ‘predictable event’ territory. At this moment the planet is giving out lots of sustained energy on one specific degree that shows up in a client’s life especially if the Rx planet in transit falls exactly on an important natal point or planet in their chart whilst stationed.

^{At this time look out for a noticeable and somewhat predictive effect (possibly even triggered by something quick, like the moon), according to the layout of the chart and the planet involved.}

This applies to all the other planets too when they go retrograde/direct. First up, look at the natal strength of the planet involved in the clients chart: is it a ruling planet, or angular? Then have a think about the transiting planets’ energy, and put it into context with the natal chart by the house, points and aspects it is affecting. Here are a few interpretive suggestions for when the transiting planets are retrograde:

As an overall concept, the point and benefits of retrogrades are to review and reconnoitre by becoming aware of missed, and then planning for corrective actions.

When interpreting retrogrades it might be easier to think about using words that have Re- as a prefix: readjust, realign, rearrange, reconsider, redesign, re-edit, refocus, reflect, reorganise, repeat, repair, rephrase, retrace, rethink….retrogrades give us the time to look back in order to look forward.

This is a time to review what you need to regenerate, let go of and move onto: mutate now, enjoy the rush.: This is a time to review your dreams, maybe watch a movie for the second time, and check whether your choices have been based on illusion or intuition.: This is a time to review the risks you didn’t take, and the ones you did: are you independent enough; are you moving through life in your own rhythm or are you slowing down to suit someone else? If you’ve been antsy, find a way to spend the energy.: This is a time to review reality. Are you succeeding or are you trapped? If it’s the latter devise new endeavours from a more realistic perspective.: Take this time to review expansive moves you’ve planned or made recently: are they high hopes or are they possible? This is a time to pay attention to how you’ve been feeling physically, sexually and energetically, to review your interests and whether you’re pursuing them; to contemplate the many ways you can channel your temper.: This is a time to review your Love life, your creativity and basically those things that give you pleasure; which includes having enough money to spend on them!
